Manchester City striker Ferran Torres broke a bone in his right foot, the England club announced on Thursday, potentially ruling him out of Spain’s crucial World Cup qualifiers next month.
City said the injury was a “small fracture” and occurred while Torres was on international duty. He played for Spain in the Nations League last week, first in the 2-1 win over Italy – when Torres scored twice – then in the 2-1 loss to France in Sunday final.
“He has since returned to Manchester for tests and will continue to be watched,” said City, who did not give a deadline for Torres’ possible absence.
Torres has established himself as a regular in the Spain squad under Luis Enrique and one of their best sources of goals.
Spain are two points behind the Swedish leader in their World Cup qualifying group ahead of their last two games. The two countries meet in the final match, on November 14, and only the first team will automatically qualify for next year’s tournament in Qatar.
