UNWTO leadership spoke at an informal meeting of EU ministers responsible for tourism, further strengthening ties with EU institutions.
The Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union has included tourism in its work program, recognizing the increased relevance and importance of the sector for an inclusive post-pandemic recovery. Addressing ministers, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised EU leaders for protecting tourism jobs and businesses and for playing a leading role in restoring confidence in international travel through harmonized rules and protocols and the introduction of the EU COVID digital certificate.
At the same time, the Secretary-General also provided EU ministers with an overview of UNWTO’s work leading the sector’s response to the crisis, as well as more recent achievements advancing climate action in the United Nations. tourism. Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission, played an active role in the UNWTO Global Tourism Crisis Committee, created to unite the sector and provide clear and harmonized recommendations for the recovery, and also visited UNWTO headquarters in Madrid for face-to-face interviews. facing talks with the Secretary-General.
Strengthening ties
This latest intervention further strengthens the links between the UNWTO and the European institutions, building on the work carried out before the pandemic. In February 2020, the UNWTO management visited Brussels. In addition to addressing the European Parliament, Secretary General Pololikashvili also met with ministers and state secretaries responsible for tourism from European countries, highlighting the role the sector can play in stimulating inclusive growth in the region. and in promoting the ambitions of the European Green Alliance. More recently, the UNWTO leadership returned to Brussels in October, with a more in-depth program focusing on the place of tourism in the recovery and future growth of European economies and societies.
After the informal meeting of EU ministers responsible for tourism, UNWTO also participated in the 20th European Tourism Forum, also organized in the context of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. EU tourism ministers will then attend the next UNWTO General Assembly, to be held in Madrid, Spain, from November 30 to December 3.
