The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022: The Winners So Far

The World’s Best 50 list, years after revamping its voting body and rules following criticism of sexism and favoritism towards European-leaning, male-run tasting menus – and Copenhagen’s Noma winning all the time – once again elevated an elite Copenhagen tasting menu restaurant to the number one slot.
Chef Rasmus Kofoed’s Geranium, one of Denmark’s most celebrated culinary establishments, won the title of “World’s Best Restaurant” in the first year that Rene Redzepi’s Noma was no longer eligible. Noma held first place in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2021: The World’s Top 50 organization instituted a rule change in 2019 that restaurants would not be eligible to win a second time, but Noma has when even managed one last victory after its closure. and moved to a new location. Kofoed’s Geranium ranks with Noma as one of Denmark’s two Michelin three-star restaurants. Located on the eighth floor of Copenhagen’s National Football Stadium, it announced last year that it would drop its already small amounts of meat on the menu from around $437 to focus on seafood and vegetables.
Central in Lima came in at No. 2, with Disfrutar in Barcelona taking third place. The results were announced at a ceremony in London hosted by Stanley Tucci. Ahead of the ceremony, the World’s 50 Best organization confirmed that Russian restaurants would not be eligible for the list this year given the country’s attacks on Ukraine. A spokesperson told Eater: “We do not hold any restaurant or bar individually responsible for the actions of their government and we recognize all those in Russia who have courageously spoken out against the actions of their leaders. However, by including Russian restaurants or bars in our top listings, we would be tacitly supporting hospitality-oriented tourism in Russia, increasing income in the country, and indirectly supporting the government through taxation… As an organization, we do not believe it is fair to promote Russia as a food or drink destination at this time. This change effectively excluded 2021 roster creators White Rabbit and Twins Garden from the roster.
In the 20-year history of the list, only European or North American restaurants have held the “best” restaurant spot. No South American or Asian restaurant has ever reached the top spot, and there is no restaurant on the Middle Eastern Top 50 list. There are no restaurants on the list in India, a country of 1.38 billion people. The only restaurant in Africa, a continent of 1.28 billion people, is a South African spot experimenting with Japanese techniques.
In addition to the Top 50 list, René Frank of Coda in Berlin was named the world’s best pastry chef; Leonor Espinosa was voted the best female chef in the world and Josep Roca won the prize for the best sommelier in the world. The Art of Hospitality award went to Atomix of New York: Atomix was also the highest-ranked American restaurant on the list, at #33. Wawira Njiru from Kenya received the Icon award.
