Shell boosts its electric vehicle charging business in Spain and Portugal

The international energy company has acquired local electric vehicle charging station developer and operator Cable Energía.
Shell España SA has acquired 100% of Cable Energía, the Spanish developer and operator of charging stations for electric vehicles. This acquisition will enable Shell to offer on-the-go electric vehicle charging services to drivers and fleets at destination locations in Spain and Portugal.
Based in Seville, Spain, Cable Energía is an electric mobility infrastructure company that aims to become one of the largest providers of electric vehicle charging services. The acquisition and additional investment from Shell will enable the company to accelerate the deployment of Cable Energia’s network in Spain and Portugal.
“Shell has a long and proud history of providing our Spanish and Portuguese customers with the energy they need, with our fantastic partner DISA. With the acquisition of Cable Energía, we will support the rapid growth of our charging network of electric vehicles in both markets and, above all, to provide an excellent charging experience for our customers,” said István Kapitány, Global Executive Vice President, Shell Mobility.
“By developing a reliable network of electric vehicle charging stations, we want to give drivers the confidence to travel the peninsula with electric vehicles and support the transition towards an efficient and accessible decarbonization of road transport”, Ignacio Lopez, Managing Director of Cable Energia.
Cable Energia currently has 80 charging stations installed in Spain and Portugal, adding to Shell’s network of approximately 20,000 public charging stations worldwide. Cable Energía becomes a 100% subsidiary of Shell, within its Mobility division.
