Queen Sofia of Spain joins Letizia in rare appearance as she meets officials in Mallorca | royal | New

She accompanied her son, King Felipe VI, and his wife, Queen Letizia, on the annual evening of local dignitaries and representatives from across the island. Traditionally, members of the Spanish Royal Family stay in Majorca at the beginning of August and the reception is part of their agenda.
For the first time, however, King Felipe welcomed his guests to Marivent Palace for the annual feast.
The Marivent is where members of the royal family stay during their stay in Mallorca.
Previously, the function was held at the Almudaina Palace which is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family on the island.
Queen Sofia, 84, joined King Felipe and Queen Letizia in shaking hands with hundreds of guests.
They then met some of them again at the main reception.
It was the first time Queen Sofia had undertaken a public engagement in several weeks.
The two daughters of King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, were not present at the event.
However, the two girls continue their stay on the island.

Queen Sofia was born in Greece in 1938 and spent her childhood in Egypt before moving to South Africa with her family during World War II.
She then studied at Fitzwilliam College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge.
At the 1960 Olympics in Rome, she was a reserve member of Greece’s gold medal-winning sailing team.
Having met Juan Carlos in 1954, the couple married in 1962 and she converted to Catholicism.
His brother Constantine II was the last reigning King of Greece from 1964 until the formal abolition of the monarchy in 1973.
