Defining global luxury travel

The InterContinental brand was created by Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan American Airways, in 1946 with a bold vision to provide luxury accommodation to all corners of the world. His 75e the anniversary is not only a time to envision its bright future, but also to recognize the brand’s rich heritage: InterContinental became the leading international hotel chain in the Middle East with the opening of Phenicia in Beirut in 1961; Martin Luther King has completed his iconic “I have a dream” at InterContinental The Willard Washington DC in 1963; The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland was awarded the title of Architectural Wonder and World’s First Career Hotel in 2018, and the InterContinental New York Barclay was the official hotel for the 2021 US Open tennis tournament.

Today, with 206 hotels and over 70 slated to open in the coming years, the vision of bringing luxury travel to emerging and established destinations continues. In the coming months, the brand will open new doors in inspiring places like Barcelona in Spain, Sorrento in Australia, Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, Kaohsiung in Taiwan and Appi Kogen in Japan.
