More than half of Britons were planning to take a short break abroad in 2019 and with travel bans lifted, many are keen to flee. But which countries are the most popular in Europe for a short stay?
The Mediterranean is the most popular destination for European mini-breaks with almost 40% of travelers seeking sunbathing and beaches.
According to the European Travel Council, Greece was one of the most popular European destinations.
Greece welcomed more than six million tourists this summer, despite hangovers from pandemic restrictions.
Santorini tops the wish lists of many tourists, with many choosing the romantic paradise island for vacations.

Mykonos is another Greek island that draws large crowds for those looking for a diving break or a family trip.
Corfu is one of the greenest islands in Greece and is another extremely popular destination with tourists.
For city trip enthusiasts, Athens has plenty to keep tourists entertained with a plethora of ancient sites to explore.
Almost 10 percent of those surveyed hoped to travel to Spain for a European mini-trip.

Spain welcomed nearly five million international tourists in August this year, many of them Britons.
Many British tourists are fans of the popular Costa del Sol region with many trips to enjoy the region’s beautiful coastline or play a round of golf at the famous Marbella courses.
Benidorm on the Costa Blanca has also seen the number of British tourists explode since travel restrictions were lifted.
British nightlife lovers are fans of Barcelona, which is well known for its lively nights out all night long as well as its many cultural attractions.
France remains the most visited country in the world despite the pandemic and 8% of people chose it for a short break.
Euro Disney, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre are the main tourist attractions, with most visitors going to Paris.
Bringing up the rear, British tourist interest in Croatia increased by eight percent last year.
The country’s beautiful Adriatic coast has many places to explore, with the coastal towns of Dubrovnik and Split being particular highlights.
