German holidaymakers will continue to visit Mediterranean tourist spots even during the fall season

As the summer season draws to a close, Spanish destinations are experiencing a new tourist boost from German holidaymakers, who have booked hotels in these destinations throughout October and early November.
Following this, the government of the Balearic Islands requested an extension of the tourist season to accommodate German holidaymakers. However, the decisions of hoteliers regarding their opening or closing will be determined by the resorts where German tourism is most represented, reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.
The German Travel Association (DRV) reveals renewed interest in Mediterranean travel this fall, with Mallorca being the top holiday destination, followed by other Spanish, Greek and Turkish destinations.
“German citizens are showing more and more their desire to travel. There is a high level of demand for traditional Mediterranean destinations’, DRV said, also noting that travelers are encouraged to travel also due to the relaxation of restrictions in the respective countries.
However, hoteliers are concerned about the last-minute nature of reservations, which has followed them through the summer season. Even so, German autumn tourism is expected to be abundant regardless of the length of the season.
Due to the different holiday dates in all states, the autumn holidays last approximately five weeks in Germany, as the following list indicates:
- In the states of Mecklenburg and Vorpommern, the holidays will start from October 2 to 9.
- In Schleswig and Holstein the holiday dates are October 4-16.
- Thuringian schools are closed from October 25 to November 6.
- Bavaria has a shorter break, November 2-5.
“The times for these breaks are determined by when summer vacation falls, while the length varies as some states only have a week off for Christmas while others have a fortnight,” Reports from the Mallorca Daily Bulletin.
On the other hand, Germany is also not lagging behind in terms of tourist numbers, as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) revealed that the country hosted 38.9 million tourists in 2018. , placing it fourth among the most visited countries in Europe.
However, according to official data, the tourism sector in the state of Brandenburg and the capital of Berlin is not doing well as a drop of 61%, representing 2.5 million overnight stays, was observed for the first semester 2021. Compared to the pre- pandemic levels, tourism suffered a decline of 84.2% in Berlin.
The Germans may have missed the tourists themselves, but in 2021 they made up for the highest number of tourists recorded in the Balearic and Canary Islands, leading to a total of 4.4 million tourists visiting the Spain in 2021. This figure represents a 78.3% increase in tourism compared to last year, which means that Spanish tourism has come as close as possible to its pre-pandemic levels.
