June 29 (Reuters) – Canada is in talks with European allies, including Spain and Germany, about exporting oil and gas from its east coast to ease energy constraints and provide an alternative to Russian energy imports from Europe, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Wednesday. .
“It is important that Canada can step in and help our European friends who are facing very difficult energy realities,” Joly told reporters.
“We have to do it in a way that also addresses the issue of climate change. And that’s exactly the conversations we have, especially with the Germans and also with the Spaniards,” she said.

Talks between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took place at the summit hosted by the leaders of the Group of Seven economic powers this week.
Canada, the world’s sixth largest producer of natural gas, currently has no LNG facilities on the east coast.
Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson told Reuters in May that Ottawa was considering accelerating two proposed LNG export projects on the east coast – Spanish company Repsol’s LNG facility (REP.MC ) in New Brunswick and the Goldboro LNG facility in Nova Scotia proposed by Pieridae Energy (PEA.TO).
